Brief History of Istanbul

Istanbul is a city with a very rich history in Turkey. Here is a brief history of Istanbul:

The history of Istanbul goes back thousands of years. In ancient times, Greek colonies were founded in this area in the 7th century BC. It later became part of the Roman Empire and became the capital of the Byzantine Empire.

Istanbul served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire for over 1000 years. During this period, the city became the center of Eastern Roman culture, and many large structures were built. The city remained under the rule of the Byzantine Empire until 1453. In 1453, the leader of the Ottoman Empire, Fatih Sultan Mehmed, laid siege to Istanbul and captured the city. This event led to the fact that Istanbul became the capital of the Ottoman Empire and began a new era in its history.

During the Ottoman period, Istanbul became a major cultural, economic and political center. Many important structures were built in the city. It became a great center of wealth and power during the heyday of the Ottoman Empire.

However, with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Istanbul lost its capital status with the formation of modern Turkey. On October 13, 1923, Ankara was declared the capital of the Republic of Turkey.

Today, Istanbul continues to enchant visitors with its history and culture. The city is known worldwide for its many historical monuments, beautiful scenery and rich cultural.  This heritage is coming  from the Ottoman and Byzantine periods.
